Build app backends and deploy web frontends with an open-source platform for auth, databases, files, and functions.

What is Appwrite?

Appwrite combines application backend services with web hosting. Developers can manage user accounts, store data and files, run functions, send notifications, and subscribe to live events within a project. Sites deploys static and server-rendered frontends alongside these services. Choose managed Appwrite Cloud or run the open-source platform on your own infrastructure.

What can Appwrite do?

Authentication and permissions

Use email-based credentials, OAuth, SMS, magic links, OTP, and MFA. Teams, memberships, roles, and session policies control access to application resources.

Databases and files

Choose TablesDB, DocumentsDB, VectorsDB, PostgreSQL, or MySQL. Store files with access controls and image transformations.

Functions, events, and notifications

Run event-driven functions, subscribe to Realtime events, and deliver email, SMS, or push messages.

Frontend deployment

Deploy static, SSR, and client-rendered applications through Git, CLI, or manual upload. Use branch previews and promote previous deployments for rollback.

Developer and agent tools

Work through APIs, SDKs, the Console, CLI, and Terraform. MCP servers connect AI agents to Appwrite projects and documentation.

Use Cases

“Launch a web or mobile application”

Combine account management, data access, file uploads, and backend functions without assembling separate services for each task.

“Build customer workspaces”

Use teams and role-based permissions to separate access for different customer groups.

“Ship a frontend with live updates”

Deploy the website with Sites and use Realtime and Messaging for changing application data and notifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the free Cloud plan include?

Each account can have one free organization and two free projects. Resource allowances are shared across those projects. Extra resources cannot be purchased on Free, and reaching a limit can restrict the affected operations.

Does a $10 database tier cover the whole Cloud bill?

No. Dedicated database compute starts at $10 per month per database. Cloud organization plans, add-ons, and extra bandwidth, execution time, or GB-hours can produce separate charges. Serverless databases have no fixed compute fee, but reads, writes, and storage remain subject to quotas and usage charges.

Does the budget cap cover every charge?

No. The organization budget cap applies to add-ons and excludes the recurring plan fee. Pro can automatically purchase additional resources until that cap is reached.

What changes when I self-host?

You operate the Docker-based installation and manage updates, scaling, infrastructure, and service-provider configuration. The source uses the BSD-3-Clause license; hosting and operational costs remain your responsibility.
