What is Char?
Char is a local-first AI notepad with an assistant called Charlie. Capture notes, meeting context, and work from connected apps, then ask Charlie to clarify a thought, draft a response, gather information, or prepare a follow-up. The desktop and mobile apps require an account; the current public entry point is a private-beta request. Features can vary by account or remain previews.
Notes start on your devices, while sync is plan-dependent. Charlie, chats, Schedules, and memory run in the cloud; Char is not end-to-end encrypted. In the default Ask first mode, Charlie requests approval before sending, publishing, paying, or deleting. Keep going allows actions within the access you grant. Review outputs, permissions, and the chosen approval mode before relying on an action.
What can Char do?
AI-assisted clarification
After a user captures a thought, the AI can ask a follow-up question to help clarify what should happen next.
Drafts and follow-ups
A note or checkbox can prompt the system to draft an email or gather a relevant number for a next step.
Work status summaries
Use a scheduled brief to gather relevant work updates and prepare a view of what needs attention. Schedules run in the cloud and consume credits, including when your devices are closed.
Persistent reference material
Keep durable material in notes and reference pages. On paid plans, Charlie can build cloud-stored memory from work context; the Free plan has no memory.
Approval and autonomy controls
Ask first is the default for critical actions that send, publish, pay, or delete. Choose Keep going only for access you are willing to delegate, and stop a run when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get access?
The current website accepts private-beta requests. Some features are previews or limited to certain accounts. Desktop and mobile use requires a Char account.
What information can Charlie use?
Use your notes and permit access to connected apps for the task. Memory is a paid-plan feature; Free has no memory. Disconnecting an app stops that connection but does not erase memory already built from it.
Does Char take action without approval?
By default, Ask first requests approval for actions that send, publish, pay, or delete. Keep going allows actions without asking within the access you granted. Schedules can run automatically; review their purpose and permissions.
Is the notepad entirely local?
No. Notes start on your devices and sync on eligible plans, but Charlie, chats, Schedules, and memory are processed in the cloud. Char is not end-to-end encrypted. Recording or transcription sends audio to processing providers; obtain the required participant consent.
What do the plans include?
Free and paid plans provide credit allowances for Charlie’s work. Credits included with a plan expire at the end of their period; purchased top-ups do not expire. Memory and Mac Awareness require paid access, while Charlie’s cloud computer is a Max-plan feature.
Are team members automatically given access to my notes?
No. Your content belongs to your own account. Membership of an organization does not automatically give colleagues access to it. Use authorized project context to prepare your own drafts and follow-ups.
