Overview

Flora Incognita is an app for interactive plant identification on smartphone and tablet. It currently recognizes more than 30,000 vascular plant species and, after a photo is taken, shows an identification suggestion with additional species information within seconds.

The app is designed for field use: observations can be saved, displayed on a map, and later reopened. Thanks to offline mode, it is also suitable for situations without network coverage as well as for schools and environmental education organizations.

Features

Guided, adaptive identification process

When taking photos, the app automatically asks for the appropriate perspectives and plant parts, and adjusts the sequence based on growth form, season, and information already captured.

Fast automatic identification

After uploading the images, you quickly receive one or more suggestions, sorted by identification probability, plus a species profile with characteristics, distribution, and conservation status.

Manage and export observations

Observations can be confirmed, saved, and later reopened under “My Observations”; the list can be searched, sorted, and exported as CSV.

Location-based species information

Species profiles are updated for the current location and show relevant ecological, conservation, and distribution information as well as further links.

Offline capture with later identification

In offline mode, you can take pictures and keep metadata such as date and location locally; the actual identification happens later once a connection is available again.

Multilingual use

The app is available as a full German and English version and offers additional localizations; the language follows the device system or can be changed manually.

Typical use cases

  • Quick plant identification on the go

On a walk, in the garden, or on excursions, you photograph an unknown plant and quickly receive a name plus background information about the species.

  • Teaching and environmental education

Teachers and educational institutions can use the app even without permanent network coverage, because photos can be taken offline and identified later.

  • Document your own observations

Users with a profile collect their observations permanently, retrieve them later on other devices, and build their personal plant list.

  • Contribute to citizen science

By saving locations of finds, each confirmed observation contributes location data that can be used for mapping and biodiversity monitoring.

  • Species information and analysis

Researchers and interested professional users can use species profiles, map views, and exportable observation lists for further analysis.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Identifies a large number of vascular plant species and expands coverage to moss, lichen, and fungus species.
  • Provides a guided photo workflow that leads even less experienced users through the capture process.
  • Saves observations permanently and makes them available later in a personal list, on the map, and via CSV export.
  • Works location-based, so species information becomes locally more relevant and often more accurate.
  • Is free and ad-free, and therefore usable without a subscription or advertising model.
  • Supports offline capture and is therefore also suitable for teaching and excursions.

Cons

  • For the actual identification, an internet connection is required; offline, images can only be captured first and identified later.
  • The sources do not provide a price or tariff structure, only that the app is free.

FAQ

Does the Flora Incognita app cost anything?

Yes. Flora Incognita is completely free and ad-free. According to the FAQ, the app is made possible through funding and institutional support.

How does identification work in the app?

The app guides you into a photo mode where you take one or more pictures of the plant. After that, you receive a name suggestion and further information within seconds; you can save the observation with the green check mark.

Do I need to create a profile?

No, you do not need a profile to use the app. If you create a profile, your observations are saved and you can retrieve them again on new or other devices.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

You can also take plant photos offline. The observation is saved and identified later once you are online again; date and location are retained if you have granted permission.

Which organism groups can Flora Incognita identify?

The app currently recognizes over 30,000 vascular plant species, about 500 moss species, and since 2025 also around 3,000 lichen and fungus species. The database is continuously expanded.
