Google NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook, the same standalone Google research tool under its new name since July 2026. Existing notebooks remain accessible. Add documents and other sources, select the material to use, then ask questions or generate summaries and study aids from that context.

It supports PDFs, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, text documents, images, audio, web pages and public captioned YouTube videos. Source-backed citations help you check answers against your material, while Audio and Video Overviews, reports, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes provide different ways to review it. Citations support checking; they do not guarantee that a generated answer is correct.

Combine uploaded or imported sources in a notebook. Select individual sources to focus a question, and ask for a specific topic summary or use the Source Guide for an overall summary.

Cited questions and answers

Ask questions about your selected material and follow in-line citations back to source evidence. More focused questions help retrieve relevant information.

Learning and presentation outputs

Generate Audio or Video Overviews, reports, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes. The current studio also includes data tables, infographics and slide decks.

Source discovery

Use a research question to find supported web sources or Google Drive files you can access, review the candidates and select what to import.

Google Drive source updates

Imported supported Drive files synchronize with the original. You need at least view access; a deleted file or lost permission makes that source inaccessible in the notebook.

What are the important import limits?

Each source can contain up to 500,000 words, or uploaded files up to 200MB; some formats have extra limits. Web imports use only page text, without embedded images/videos or nested pages; paywalled pages are unsupported. YouTube imports require a public captioned video and use its transcript.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Free users can add up to 50 sources per notebook. Plus and Pro allow 100 and 300 sources respectively. Ultra allows 500 sources with the 20 TB plan or 600 with the 30 TB plan, with higher generation access. Generation limits depend on the artifact; Google AI plan availability varies by region. Business, school and Enterprise access follow their organization routes.

What do I need to access the tool?

Sign in with an eligible personal Google Account or a supported work/school account. Organization administrators must enable managed-account access. Country and age requirements apply, and mobile features can differ from the desktop version.

Does Google use my notebook content for training?

Individual data is not used for model training unless you submit feedback; review of feedback may include queries, uploads and responses. For qualifying Workspace or Education use, uploads, queries and responses are not used for AI training or human review. Data may still be processed for safety and technical reliability.
