Aprenda a língua de sinais americana com IA e contribua com vídeos para um conjunto de dados público.

O que é Signs?

Signs is a web-based platform for learning American Sign Language with AI assistance and for contributing sign-language videos to a dataset. The home page presents two main paths: Learn ASL, which uses a webcam and AI feedback to help users practice signs, and Record Signs, which lets contributors record individual words or signs for dataset creation.

The project is led by NVIDIA in partnership with Hello Monday/DEPT® and the American Society for Deaf Children. Its stated goal is to support ASL learners, help hearing families communicate with Deaf children, and build a public dataset that can be used to develop accessible technology for the Deaf community.

O que Signs pode fazer?

Interactive ASL learning

Practice American Sign Language through a webcam-based learning flow that gives real-time feedback while you work through the basics and selected levels.

3D avatar feedback

Receive guidance from a 3D avatar in the Learn section, which is presented as an alternative to static text-based or video-only learning.

Sign contribution workflow

Record individual ASL signs and submit them to a shared dataset, with each submission tied to a selected word from the site’s list.

Tutorial and level selection

Use the tutorial and level selection flow to orient first-time users before they begin learning or recording signs.

Multi-camera device handling

Select from multiple cameras when the device has more than one camera available, supporting webcam capture on desktop setups.

Consent-based data collection

Submit footage under disclosure terms that explain the data collection and public distribution process for the ASL dataset.

Casos de uso

“Start learning ASL”

A beginner can start in the Learn section, use the tutorial, choose a level, and practice commonly used ASL signs with feedback from the AI-driven interface.

“Contribute sign videos”

A person who already knows some ASL can record a sign from the list and submit a single example to help expand the shared dataset.

“Family communication practice”

A hearing parent or family member can use the platform to begin learning signs that support everyday communication with Deaf children and relatives.

“Review data collection terms”

A project contributor or researcher can rely on the disclosure terms to understand how footage is used, shared, and governed before participating.

“Community dataset building”

An ASL community participant can help improve representation in the dataset by contributing approved recordings that are later verified by Deaf reviewers and certified interpreters.

Perguntas frequentes

What is Signs used for?

Signs is designed as a two-sided platform: learners can practice common ASL signs with AI-guided feedback, while contributors can record signs that help expand the public dataset.

Who is the Learn section for?

The Learn section is aimed at beginners and people starting ASL, with levels that introduce commonly used signs and provide real-time feedback through a 3D avatar.

Who can contribute sign videos?

Anyone who consents to the disclosure can contribute, regardless of ASL proficiency. Contributions are reviewed by Deaf individuals and certified interpreters before being used in the dataset.

Does the dataset cover facial expressions and head movements?

The dataset is being built primarily around hand and finger positions. The site notes that non-manual signals such as facial expressions and head movements are important, but they are not the initial focus.

Is the collected data public?

NVIDIA says the dataset will be made public and broadly available. The disclosure also says contributors can request access, removal from future use or distribution, or correction of their data using the unique ID provided after contribution.
