O que é MacGPT?

MacGPT is an independent macOS client for accessing ChatGPT while working on your desktop. Open a conversation from the menu bar or a keyboard shortcut, use the Global prompt field, or trigger Inline generation inside a supported text field. You can also copy a conversation transcript or use conversation mode to speak instead of typing.

Web mode loads the ChatGPT website and uses your OpenAI account. Global, Inline and native API features require your own OpenAI API key with a payment method linked to it; API usage is not included with the app license. Choose the mode that fits your account and budget, and review generated text before using it.

Menu-bar and shortcut access

Start a chat from the menu bar icon. The gear menu lets you assign a keyboard shortcut to activate MacGPT.

Global prompt field

Activate a text field in the middle of the screen to start a ChatGPT conversation without navigating to a browser tab. This native feature requires your own billed API key.

Inline text generation

Enter the trigger phrase and a prompt in a supported text field. Global and Inline require macOS Ventura or newer, and Inline does not work in every app.

Web or native API mode

Use the ChatGPT web interface with your account, or communicate through your own OpenAI API key in native mode. App access and API usage are separate.

Conversation transcript copying

Copy a readable transcript of the whole ChatGPT conversation for your notes or further editing.

Spoken conversation mode

Use conversation mode to talk back and forth with ChatGPT instead of typing each message.

What is required for native features?

Global, Inline and native API mode require your own OpenAI API key with a payment method linked to it. The seller explicitly says API usage is not included in the app price. A ChatGPT account or subscription is separate from this API setup.

Does Inline work in every app?

No. The website names Sublime Text, Notion and WhatsApp as examples where Inline does not work. Global and Inline also require macOS Ventura or newer.

How does web mode work?

MacGPT loads the ChatGPT chat interface in a web view. Log in with your OpenAI account, then open conversations from the menu-bar icon. Access depends on the ChatGPT website and your account.

How is the app licensed?

The official Gumroad listing currently permits a €0 pay-what-you-want personal license and describes one-time licensing with no subscription. This covers the MacGPT client, not OpenAI API charges or a separate ChatGPT subscription.

Is the iPhone app the same product?

The developer offers GeePeeTee separately for iPhone. MacGPT is the macOS app; the iPhone listing and its conditions should be considered separately.
