Guided photo identification
The app requests relevant plant parts and perspectives, adapting to growth form, season, and images already captured. It returns species suggestions ordered by identification probability.
Photo-based plant identification, observation lists, and field learning on your phone.
Flora Incognita is a free, ad-free plant identification app for smartphones and tablets. Photograph an unfamiliar plant, follow the requested views of leaves or flowers, and receive a suggested species or a short list of candidates. Deep neural networks analyze the images, while species profiles help you compare characteristics, distribution, and conservation information.
Confirm the result to save an observation, build a personal plant list, and revisit findings on a map. Identification requires an internet connection and sends images and metadata to the server; offline mode saves photos for later identification. Use suggestions as a starting point for checking a plant’s identity, not as proof that an unknown plant is safe to eat or handle.

Compare the suggested species with information about its characteristics, distribution, ecology, and conservation status. Some profile information depends on location and may not be available in every language or region.
Confirm and save findings, search or sort the observation list, review details, and correct a species name when necessary. Saved observations can also appear on an interactive map.
Export an observation list as a CSV table for reviewing or organizing field records outside the app.
Photograph plants without mobile coverage and identify the saved observation once a connection returns. Location information is retained when the relevant permission is granted.
Use the app without creating a profile, or create one to access your observation list when signing in on another device.
Photograph an unfamiliar plant and compare the proposed identity with the species profile and visible characteristics.
Capture plant observations during an excursion, including places without network coverage, then identify and discuss them after reconnecting.
Save confirmed observations, revisit their locations, and export the list for further organization.
Share permitted location information with plant observations to support citizen-science mapping and biodiversity research.
Yes. The application is free and ad-free, supported by research funding and institutional support.
You can photograph and save plants offline. Identification happens after you reconnect, because images and metadata are analyzed on the server. Location is saved when you grant the corresponding permission.
No. A profile is optional. A profile lets you retrieve observations on another signed-in device. Guest observations can be lost when you sign out or uninstall the app, so consider how you want to preserve your records.
Yes. Review the candidate species and its profile, then confirm the observation. You can later edit the species name in a saved record. An AI suggestion is not a guarantee of the correct identity or the plant’s safety.
Full German and English versions are available, with additional localizations that can contain some English content. The app follows the device language, and you can change it in settings.
