Coffee bag label reading
Photograph a bag and the app fills in the roaster, coffee name, roast date, origin and flavour information. Review the fields and correct anything that was read incorrectly before saving.
Record the espresso recipe that works for every bag of coffee, then find it again when you brew it next.
BeanRitual is an iPhone app for people who make espresso at home. It keeps a record of the recipe that worked for each bag of coffee, so a successful grind, dose or extraction time can be found again later. Photograph a bag to create a coffee record, log each shot, and mark the best attempt. The app then shows that recipe on the coffee's page alongside the machine and grinder used.

Record dose, grind setting, extraction time and yield for each espresso, with time and yield available as optional fields. Add a simple tasting assessment to describe how the shot turned out.
Keep every attempt and mark the one that worked. When you open that coffee again, its starred espresso recipe is available on the coffee page.
View coffees in one shelf grouped by roaster and search the collection. Each entry shows its starred recipe and the number of days since the roast date.
Save the machine and grinder names used for a recipe, making it possible to see which setup produced the recorded espresso.
Log shots without a network connection. If label reading fails or a field is wrong, type the details yourself; the support page says the app only fills empty fields when correcting an existing record.
Photograph a newly opened coffee bag, check its label details, and record several espresso attempts while adjusting dose or grind. Keep the unsuccessful tries so you can see how the recipe changed.
Open the coffee's page when the same bag returns to your shelf and use its starred recipe as a starting point instead of relying on memory.
Use the shot history and tasting notes to compare what happened when the grind, dose, time or yield changed during dialing in.
Record shots offline during preparation. Enter bag details manually when the label cannot be read or the phone has no network.

Shot logging works offline. Label reading requires a network connection; if it cannot run, the app tells you and you can enter the coffee fields manually.
Coffees, shots, gear, notes and label photos are stored in the app's database on your iPhone. A bag photo is sent to the service for label reading and the product site says its server does not keep that photo.
