Payload is an open-source headless CMS and application framework built with TypeScript and React for Next.js. Developers define content and application behavior in code; Payload supplies an Admin Panel, database operations, APIs, authentication, permissions, and file handling. Editors use the resulting interface to maintain structured content.
The core software can be installed in a new or existing Next.js application and deployed on infrastructure you choose. It supports websites, internal applications, commerce, and digital asset management. Enterprise offerings add separately scoped features and support, including AI tools for content retrieval.
What can Payload do?
Code-defined schemas and customization
Define your data model and extend the generated React Admin Panel with your own components. Database support includes MongoDB and Postgres, with migrations and direct database access.
Content management and live preview
Editors work in an Admin Panel that reflects the configured data model. Live preview supports checking content as it is edited; reusable interfaces depend on the configuration built for the project.
Access control and file handling
Set custom access rules at the document, field, and operation level. Built-in uploads provide image resizing, focal-point cropping, and media permissions.
Enterprise content embeddings
Configure JSON-to-text conversion and a chunking strategy. On document save, an AI adapter generates embeddings for each chunk, stores them in the database, and keeps them synchronized as content changes.
Enterprise writing assistance
The Enterprise AI offering provides text suggestions and rewriting. AI translation and prompt-based image generation are marked as coming soon; they are not current core CMS features.

The core repository is MIT-licensed and grants use, modification, and distribution free of charge, subject to retaining its copyright and permission notice. Enterprise services and features have separate commercial terms. The software licence does not supply hosting infrastructure.
What does a developer need to configure?
Payload is installed in a new or existing Next.js application. A TypeScript configuration defines the data model and application behavior; Payload generates the Admin Panel and APIs. The developer also configures deployment and the database.
Can non-developers manage content?
Yes. Editors use the generated React Admin Panel and live preview after a developer configures the project. Custom editing interfaces can be built for the project; the Enterprise Visual Editor is currently marked as coming soon.

Enterprise Auto-Embedding describes configurable chunking, AI-adapter embeddings, and synchronization with saved content. Enterprise AI offers writing suggestions and rewriting. Translation and image generation are marked as coming soon.
How do permissions and AI retrieval fit together?
Payload supports document-, field-, and operation-level access rules. The Enterprise embedding workflow also describes retrieval based on each user’s permissions. The application still needs its own configuration and review of generated answers.
