Stream, process and govern Kafka-based data for applications, analytics and AI

What is IBM Confluent?

IBM Confluent is an enterprise data-streaming platform for moving Kafka-based events between systems, processing changing data and governing the pipelines used by applications, analytics and AI.

For the managed Cloud workflow, create a cluster and topic, connect a producer or source connector, then inspect the messages and schema before downstream applications consume them. Managed Apache Flink processes streams, while Tableflow turns streams into open tables. Deployment, governance and billing choices determine which components you use.

What can IBM Confluent do?

Managed Kafka streaming

Confluent Cloud supplies a fully managed Kafka-based service. Choose the cloud provider, region and cluster type for the required workload and availability.

Source and sink connectors

Prebuilt Kafka connectors move events between databases, SaaS applications, on-premises systems and cloud services, with cluster credentials configured for access.

Stream governance

Use the configured governance package to manage schemas and inspect data movement. Schemas define the fields and types expected by producers and consumers.

Processing and open tables

Use managed Apache Flink for real-time transformations and queries. Tableflow makes topic data available as open tables for analytics and AI data workflows.

Use Cases

“Connect event-driven applications”

Publish operational events into topics and let downstream applications consume updated messages instead of relying only on periodic batch exports.

“Prepare data for AI applications”

Supply fresh, governed and replayable enterprise events as context for agents or models, while retaining control over pipeline structure and policies.

“Build streaming analytics”

Transform incoming events with stream processing or expose them as tables, then use the resulting data in analytical applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need for the Cloud quickstart?

You need a Confluent Cloud account and an environment with a Stream Governance package. Choose a provider and region, review the cluster cost, and supply a payment method or promotional code if required. The tutorial uses a single-zone Basic cluster and then creates a topic and sample producer.

What is included in the Cloud trial?

New Cloud signups receive $400 to use during their first 30 days. Basic includes its first Kafka compute unit free, while data ingress/egress and storage have separate usage charges. Budget for the components and traffic you select after the trial credit ends.

How is the Cloud bill calculated?

Charges depend on Kafka compute, network traffic and storage; connectors also have throughput and task charges. Flink, Tableflow and governance have their own billing dimensions. Prices are stated in USD unless otherwise noted and vary by cloud region. Estimate the chosen components rather than treating the starting cluster figure as a total bill.

How does the platform help AI systems?

The platform delivers live and replayable enterprise data as governed context for AI agents and applications. It provides the streaming and data-management foundation; the application still determines how to use that data.
